If you don’t live in Chicago, you could be forgiven for not knowing much about the case of Laquan McDonald, the petty criminal who, in dying, may end up taking Rahm Emanuel’s political career with him.
Regardless of were you live, you should know who Rahm Emanuel is. In spite of the fact that he’s a patently corrupt man, he’s actually kind of an interesting character. Rahm studied at the Evanston School of Ballet and The Joel Hall Dance Center, then attended Sarah Lawrence College, a “liberal arts school with a strong dance program.” Apparently ballet wasn’t enough for him, so he turned to politics.
A long-time cog in the Clinton political machine, Emanuel was appointed by President-elect Barack Obama in 2008 to serve as his first White House Chief of Staff. It was Emanuel who quipped, regarding Obama’s attempt to ramrod his policies down the public’s collective throats, “You never want a serious crisis to go to waste.”
In 2010, Emanuel resigned from the Obama administration to run for mayor of Obama’s hometown of Chicago. After winning and assuming office in 2011, he began to govern the city as it has always been governed: corruptly.
Fast-forward to October 20, 2014. In the Archer Heights neighborhood of Chicago (just west of a train yard), 17-year-old Laquan McDonald was shot to death by Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke. This incident may turn out to be the end (or an end) of Rahm Emanuel’s political career. But both the shooting and its repercussions present a sad (and highly partisan) picture of how race and racism are treated in America.
The Laquan McDonald Shooting
Unlike the cases of Freddie Gray and Michael Brown, this is one that can’t be spun as a story of a police officer executing an “unarmed black teen.” McDonald was carrying a knife and actively breaking into vehicles when he was confronted by officers from the Chicago Police Department. He brazenly sliced the tires of a police patrol car and then walked away as officers commanded him multiple times to drop the weapon. When he refused to comply, Officer Van Dyke emptied a magazine into McDonald, killing him.
Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder after the release of dash-cam video that had been buried for over a year.
It’s pretty obvious why the incident was covered up. According to the city prosecutor, the order to withhold the disturbing video came directly from Rahm Emanuel’s City Hall. WThe video of a police shooting like this in Chicago could have buried Mr. Emanuel’s chances for re-election. And it would likely have ended the career of the police superintendent, Garry F. McCarthy.”
Directly following Emanuel’s reelection, the city paid off the McDonald family to the tune of $5 million. Then, when a court order finally forced the police department to release the dash-cam video, all hell broke loose. Apparently unwilling to let a good crisis go to waste, Rahm Emanuel fired Garry McCarthy, opting to save his own bacon by sacrificing some pork. Both Emanuel and McCarthy are white guys, so no racism there, apparently. Just business as usual for Clinton/Obama cronies.
But Was It Racism?
The immediate assumption by just about everybody is that Van Dyke shot McDonald because he’s a racist. Whatever … I don’t know Van Dyke and I don’t know why he shot a man who (though visibly armed) happened to be walking away from him.
The question nobody seems to be asking is whether the “F the po-po” attitudes fostered by the Trayvon protesters, the Ferguson rioters, and Baltimore looters and others contributed to McDonald’s death. I don’t have enough information to speculate on why Van Dyke fired those 16 shots. But we do know one thing: if McDonald had complied with the lawful orders by police officers at the scene, he would undoubtedly be alive today.
But remember: the death of a black criminal at the hands of the police is always a cause to rally behind. Blaming the dead guy—even if his actions contributed to or caused his own death—is never acceptable if the victim is black and the cop is white.
A Racist Response
Possibly emboldened by the results of the Concerned Student 1950 radicals in using phony cries of racism to oust the chancellor and president at the University of Missouri, a student at the University of Chicago turned to threats of terrorism to bring awareness to the Laquan McDonald case.
The threat appeared on the website worldstarhiphop.com (I won’t bother with a link). Someone happened to notice it and informed authorities. The University of Chicago cancelled classes and Jabari R. Dean, an African-American student majoring in electrical engineering, was arrested for posting the threat.
“White devils.” Nice, huh? Can you imagine the legs this story would’ve grown if the races were reversed and a white student threatened to kill “black devils” at a liberal university?
More Fake Racism from the Left
Police assure us that Dean didn’t have the firepower to carry out the attack. But that doesn’t diminish his crime. Give him credit, though: at least he was honest about his own racism and didn’t falsely impugn the motives of others. You can’t say the same for Kayla-Simone McKelvey, a graduate of New Jersey’s Kean University, an African-American woman who is the former president of that institution’s Pan-African Student Union.
According to authorities, on November 17 the self-described “activist” attended a race rally on Kean’s Union campus. Halfway through the event, McKelvey went to the campus library, where she created a fake Twitter account (@keanusagainstblk) which she used to post “false flag” threats against black students:
McKelvey then went back to the rally to spread the word about the “threat.” According to authorities, she has been charged with third-degree creating a public false alarm.
How is it that we still have problems with racism in America? Wasn’t Obama (or at least the election of Obama) supposed to fix that?
Always Wrong on Race
According to a recent Economist/YouGov poll, 55 percent of Americans believe race relations are worse since Obama’s election. Only eight percent say they have improved. Is the problem that we’re all just like Obama’s racist grandmother, “a typical white person”? Is this, as Obama said before his election, “just the nature of race in our society.”
Hardly. Obama’s presidency, instead of assuring everyone that America is finally a color-blind society, has emboldened the radical racist elements on the left—the people who stand to lose the most if racism is eradicated from America.
He and/or his administration have chosen the wrong side in every major racial issue of the past seven years:
Trayvon Martin. “If I had a son, he would look like Trayvon.” Guess what? Zimmerman’s trial proved that the only racists in the story were Trayvon and Rachel “Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” Jeantel. Trayvon was proven to be an aggressive thug who attacked a Zimmerman without provocation. You want to take back that statement now, Obama?
Michael Brown. Instead of asking people to reserve judgment in the Michael Brown shooting until all of the evidence was in, he instead encouraged his constituents to “keep protests peaceful.” Guess what? They didn’t. Meanwhile, the grand jury exonerated the officer completely. Eighty arrests and 25 burned businesses later, Obama still hasn’t apologized for his naiveté.
Freddie Gray. The president sent three government officials to attend Freddie Gray’s funeral, while sending nobody to attend the funeral of Officer Brian Moore, a white NYPD officer killed in cold blood by a black man. Gray was a career criminal who it appears may have actually injured himself while trying to create injuries to sustain a brutality claim.
Henry Louis Gates. Obama admitted that he “helped contribute to ratcheting” up a controversy after Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates was arrested. After he initially claimed the Cambridge police acted “stupidly,” it was the president who turned out to be an idiot.
New Black Panthers. The president has not, however, apologized for dropping federal charges against four members of the New Black Panther party in Philadelphia—charges that would definitely have led to convictions. Even after six Justice Department lawyers wanted to pursue the case, they were overruled by AAG Thomas Perrelli—an Obama political appointee. Commenting on the case, AG Eric Holder said, “When you compare what people endured in the South in the 60s to try to get the right to vote for African Americans, and to compare what people were subjected to there to what happened in Philadelphia—which was inappropriate, certainly that … I think does a great disservice to people who put their lives on the line, who risked all, for my people.” In other words: we dropped the case because racism!
The list could go on and on. The point is, after millions of white voters cast ballots in 2008 to prove they weren’t racist, the black grievance-mongers (including Obama himself) stepped up to prove unequivocally that they are.
Where Are the Racists?
Apparently, I’m not the only person who thinks this. A 2013 Rasmussen poll examined perceptions of both white and black Americans regarding racism. While just 15 percent of respondents said that most white Americans are racist, a whopping 37 percent said that most black Americans are. Curiously, more black people said that blacks are mostly racist (31 pecent) than said the same thing about whites (24 percent).
|Race of respondent||Responded "Yes"|
|Race of respondent||Responded "Yes"|
But maybe that’s just perceptions. Maybe the “white devils” are just all racist against blacks, calling them racist because of their racism. And maybe the black people are all racist against … themselves, or something. I’m sure it makes sense somehow.
Democrats Respond to Shooting
Since the release of the dashcam video of Laquan McDonald’s killing, high-profile Democrats have decried the horrors of police violence.
For example, President Obama (Emanuel’s friend and former boss) announced he was “deeply disturbed by the footage of the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald.” As in the Michael Brown case, he begged Chicagoans for “peaceful protests.” Judging from the bottles and other objects thrown at police officers during the demonstrations, his words are apparently no longer magical.
Hillary Clinton, wife of another of Rahm’s former bosses, also weighed in on the Laquan McDonald case, going to Twitter to eulogize “the loss of so many young African Americans taken too soon.” Prepping for her push to disarm law-abiding citizens (though not, apparently, rogue police officers or knife-wielding criminals), she lamented: “We cannot go on like this.”
Not one of the high-profile Democrats who has commented on the case has chastised Emanuel for covering up the case and burying the video in order to keep “them n*****s voting Democratic” (LBJ’s words, not mine) and get him reelected. Instead, they shrilled on about the waste of McDonald’s life, bemoaned the allegedly racist cop, and ignored another important case of Chicago v. McDonald in order to justify more “common-sense gun control.”
Will Rahm Hold On?
Who knows? And honestly … does it matter? If Rahm goes away, he’ll land on K-street or on MSNBC. He’ll be replaced by another corruptocrat with a D beside his name.
Never underestimate a Democrat’s ability to bounce back from a scandal—either by retaining office or by turning a resignation into a golden parachute. Teddy “Chappaquiddick” Kennedy killed a woman and the only time he served was 40 more years in the Senate. Bill “Slick My Willy” Clinton came out of his own scandals with offers of fellatio from high-profile feminists. Elliot “Spits or Swallows” Spitzer was rewarded for his prostitution scandal by being given his on TV program. Hillary “Redact This” Clinton turned Benghazi and an email server scandal into a likely nomination for the presidency.
Regardless of what happens, we know a few things. Democrats will continue to pander to African-Americans, while pushing policies that stab them in the back. The media will continue to chase the next “black man shot by police” story in order to sell papers or ad impressions. And a largely colorblind America will continue to be reminded of how racist America is … for as long as the charge of racism can make political hay for the Democrat Party.
